WTF: What the Folk! open mic returns at new venue

Hello gang,

I know that a lot of you have been inconsolable ever since it was announced that we would have to leave our beloved Spencer House but... weep no more. It gives me great pleasure to announce that WTF! has found a new home and it is fabulous!

As of January 26th, 2018... we will be meeting as usual every second and fourth Friday of the month at the historic George Wright House [aka the Women's Council House] located on the corner of Inglis Street and Young Avenue in the south end of Halifax. 

This is an extraordinary place... both of beauty and of history and so I ask you to please take a few moments to acquaint yourself.

The space we will be using consists of the acoustically rich large double parlour, the sun porch, the kitchen, and the butler's pantry. There is a washrooom and facilities are available to prepare tea and coffee; however, unlike Spencer House... there is no on-site baker to create mouth watering desserts and so we are looking into options. Perhaps going on post Christmas sweets diets is in order :)

The actual civic address is 989 Young Avenue. Entrance at night is through the Ramp Door only. 

There is no parking on the premises as the driveway is reserved for the building's tenants; however, there is plenty of parking on Young, Inglis and South Park plus there is a pay parking lot next to the apartment building at 1030 South Park Street.

For those who choose to leave their cars at home... there are at least 5 bus routes that pass by the corner of South Park, Young and Inglis - #14 and #9 plus the University Routes #10, #17 and #18.

I expect that we will have some minor adjustments at first; however, I also expect that it will be nothing our merry musical band can't handle with humour, humility, and grace :)

"What goes around... comes around"

One of the most interesting concepts that we all stumble across in our lives sooner or later is that of KARMA. In fact, Karma is such an important teaching tool that it features in many of the world's major religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism. 

*Karma essentially means that this happened because that happened. 

In other words... karma is the law of cause and effect. 

Karma can also be neatly defined through Newton's third law: 

every action has an equal or opposite reaction.

Join Guest Host JIM SMITH as we sing songs and tell stories wherein the protagonists get what they give. If they're mean... they get bad karma ~ bad things willhappen. If they're kindly and nice... they get good karma ~ good things willhappen. You might also want to consider songs or stories wherein karma is deserved but has not yet been doled out. And if you are completely stumped... you can always go with songs and stories featuring cars and/or dear old ma.

Come anytime after 6:30pm. Entertainment starts around 7:00

 and goes until 9:00ish. As always... admission is by free-will donation 

towards the Society's work. All proceeds from the sale of baked goods and beverages from the Spencer House kitchen will go to help support the operation of Spencer House.

Parking is available on site behind the building after 6:00pm, and on some of the neighbouring streets. Avoid areas displaying Permit Parking signs.

 Happy May Day! Welcome to May! The month guaranteed to put a bounce in your step and a smile on your face. Have a listen to Steeleye Span singing *Padstow. You will be bouncing 'round the Maypole grinning ear to ear in no time at all.

ONE... on Friday, May 8th... WTF! will be guest hosed by Dan McKinnon, singer, songwriter, guitarist, historian and musical storyteller extraordinaire freshly back home from his annual UK tour. For this occasion, Dan has chosen the theme...SONGS THAT INSPIRED YOU.

Two...I have long been inspired by Steeleye Span with their heartstoppingly daring arrangements of traditional songs combined with Maddie Pryor's mesmerizing voice.

But what about you?

Perhaps you have a favourite group or singer whose music has touched you or inspired you to add one of their songs to your repertoire. Maybe you were inspired to learn to play a musical instrument or learn another language because of the beauty of a piece of music. Or... perhaps the mere sound of the caliope inspired you to run away and join the circus.

Whatever your inspiration... there's a song to be sung and a tale to be told about how it came to be yours. Sharing while riding a unicycle or walking on stilts is optional :)

Happy Spring! or Wishful Thinking? at WTF: What the Folk!

Happy Spring!

If you find yourself in a state of disbelief or discouragement; feeling disengaged and disgusted... dissing anyone or anything responsible for what has been cascading down upon us seemingly endlessly for weeks and threatening to keep us buried for months... take a moment please to reflect upon the plight of the poor bewildered spring bulbs... crocus, snowdrops, daffodils... those hapless harbingers of Spring whose optimistic shoots are even now struggling to reach the sun, compelled to soldier on in the face of great adversity.

There's a valuable lesson to be learned here. If, like those bulbs, you find yourself stuck in sh*t not of your choosing; buried over your head in sh*t not of your making... grounded due to circumstances beyond your control... use your head to push that sh*t aside and let your inner beauty rise above it.

The theme for March 27th is WISHFUL THINKING!
