Bethany began telling stories many decades ago while working at a summer camp. Realizing that her young campers were not really engaged in the book she was reading aloud to them, she closed the book and began to tell and they all sat up and listened, and begged for more. Since then she has told stories at festivals, concerts, and Story Cafes, as well as in libraries and schools from South Korea to Cote d’Ivoire, from England to Nepal. Bethany brings her background as an actor, French teacher and world traveler to her performances. Since returning to Canada in 2004 Bethany has worked with Storytelling Alberta as a performer and mentor. She has also been busy with Artist-in-Residencies offering Storytelling workshops in both English and French. In 2008 Bethany toured Quebec as a participant in the Canadian Children’s Book Centre Book Week and in 2011 was given a special recognition award for “Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning” for her work as a storyteller, playwright and theatre director with Caraway School in Edmonton

Storytellers Circle of Halifax Open Mic Gathering

The Storytellers Circle of Halifax will hold its monthly gathering Thursday Nov 12, and 7:00 PM on ZOOM. This month we are celebrating Canadian Storytelling Day for the 9th time with an Open Mic with the theme "A Land of Legends" .  Do you have a Canadian Legend to Share? Do you want to hear a few Canadian Legends? We are not in our cozy regular venue right now, and we can't provide home-baked goodies, but we can provide enthusiastic listeners. There is no cost for this event, but you must register to get the link and passcode either through FaceBook or by emailing  halifaxstorytellers@gmail.com   The link will be sent to all registered participants 30 minutes before we start.

Synopsis  - Pulse

Blending viola, voice, movement, animation and storytelling, Pulse weaves together Campbell’s own coming-of-age story, where profound encounters with music and love change the course of her life. It tells the true story of how she finally found her musical 'pulse'.  After frustrating and funny detours to music college and Mexican orchestras, Campbell makes a visit to Cape Breton which sends her home with a spring in her step.  Pulse has been supported by Creative Scotland; it premiered in Celtic Connections Festival and was part of the Made in Scotland showcase 2016. Mairi has appeared at Celtic Colours.

Join Dartmouth Book Exchange for a Night of Spooky Tales told by Professional Storyteller Cindy Campbell-Stone, liaison of the Helen Creighton Folklore Society. ***This event is appropriate for children 10+, but they must be accompanied by an adult, as it is not for the faint of heart.

NEW: Steve Vernon will be joining Cindy in telling some of Nova Scotia's Spooky Tales. He will be bringing a selection of his books for purchase & signing after the event.

Brand new copies of the 2nd ed. Bluenose Ghosts in Trade Paperback will be for sale at the event. There will also be a limited amount of used paperback copies.

Ghosts guarding buried treasure, phantom ships, haunted houses and supernatural warnings of death—these are just some of the strange and mysterious phenomena that you will encounter in Bluenose Ghosts. These unexplained mysteries are all the more chilling because they are based on personal experiences of ordinary people, told to Helen Creighton, one of Canada’s most respected and renowned folklorists, over a period of thirty years. So when the moon is full and the wind is howling, be prepared to be spooked by apparitions and things that go bump in the night.

A real  “Coast to Coast”  House Concert  - Not just Vancouver to Halifax 

Thursday evening Aug 15 at 7:30 pm.

Limited to about 20 people, members first. Non-members can be put on waiting list.

Victoria Storyteller and English Professor, Moira Walker, researched and told  the story of Viola  Desmond when Desmond was chosen for the $10 bill. She is looking forward to telling this story in Nova Scotia.

Save the date for this special edition of our Storytellers Circle of Halifax gathering on Monday Sep 16.
This is a two hour presentation (with Break) feathering Ballads of the Sefardic Jews of Spain and the second half about tracing and collecting them. There will be no Open Mic this evening. Regular sessions will return in October.

Admission:  Pay what you can - $15 suggested

Ethnomusicologist, singer, teller - I sing stories and tell songs from many traditions - Sephardic from Morocco, Turkey, Greece and the Balkans; Spanish and Portuguese villages, Francophone Canada, Yiddish, Medieval Europe....  leading the audience through mini-labyrinths of the  stories of the people I learned them from, and my own stories of traveling and singing. I am happy to present in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese, and to adjust programmes to different audiences. I often accompany myself with traditional string and/or percussion instruments.
